Partners in Practice: Media and Migration Course

Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication — Erasmus Univerisity Rotterdam

Contact: Camila Sarria Sanz, Project Producer, camilasarriasanz@gmail.com

Partners in Practice is an initiative within the Media & Migration course at ESHCC (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam), funded by Impact at the Core, and designed to connect students with the real-world impacts of technology on migration. The course invites students to explore how technology empowers and hinders migrants’ lives. Rather than being a solely theoretical exercise grounded in secondary research, students will have the opportunity to leverage the Translocal Lives network of partners to develop their research projects.

Impact

01

Fostering Practical Engagement: Translocal Lives transforms theoretical learning into real-world applications by involving students in projects that address current migration issues. Students work directly with stakeholders such as NGOs and government bodies, for example, by evaluating how technology supports migrant integration or access to diverse services.

02

Promoting Interdisciplinary Learning: By integrating resources and knowledge from various fields—such as technology, migration studies, and social sciences—Translocal Lives encourages students to adopt a multidisciplinary approach. This broadens their understanding and enriches their research by combining different perspectives.

03

Developing Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: Students are challenged to address complex issues related to migration and technology, requiring them to analyze data, evaluate solutions, and propose effective strategies and recommendations. This process enhances their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as they tackle real-world challenges.

04

Cultivating Global Awareness and Cultural Sensitivity: Engagement with diverse stakeholders and study of global migration issues help students develop a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives. This fosters cultural sensitivity and awareness of the global context in which migration and technology intersect.

05

Encouraging Community Engagement and Social Responsibility: Through partnerships with social organizations and active involvement in migration-related projects, students learn the importance of community engagement and social responsibility. They directly contribute to (digital) strategies that have the potential to positively impact migrants and their communities.
