Our Initiatives

This section showcases our initiatives aimed at creating meaningful, community-centered impact at the intersection of migration and media technologies. Spanning educational programs, research projects, communication strategies, and practical, hands-on efforts, each initiative is thoughtfully developed in collaboration with funders and partners. Through these partnerships and shared expertise, we seek to address pressing issues, provide valuable insights, and empower our community toward positive change. If you have an idea for an initiative and are interested in partnering with Translocal Lives, we welcome you to reach out and explore a potential collaboration.

Partners in Practice: Media and Migration Course

October 2024 — February 2025

Partners in Practice is an initiative within the Media & Migration course at ESHCC (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam), funded by Impact at the Core, and designed to connect students with the real-world impacts of technology on migration. Beyond traditional classroom learning, students will work directly with three of our key partners—Re-starter, EXPR, and the BAM Collective—allowing them to develop projects rooted in real-world challenges and experiences. Through this initiative, students gain practical experience, contribute their own research, and advance the broader conversation on migration and technology in collaboration with leading organizations in the field.

Digital Place-makers: Participatory Video Program

September 2021 — February 2022

Digital Place-makers is a program where participants explore digital media technologies to share their perspectives on place-making and belonging, while reflecting on ethical ways to enhance newcomers' agency through digital tools. Over six hands-on sessions, participants used analog methods (collaging, storyboarding, writing) and digital tools (video-making, photography, voice recording) to co-create knowledge inspired by their daily digital practices. Together, they produced eleven short films addressing themes of identity, belonging, aspirations, social connections, well-being, and opportunities for livelihoods in a new society.
